ABSTRACT

ThisdissertationinvestigatesthesyntacticpropertiesofclauselinkageinKhmercomplexsentences.Threequestionsareaddressed:

(1)WhatkindoflinkagerelationsarethereinKhmercomplexsentences?
(2)WhatkindofcoreferentialrelationsofnounphrasesexistbetweenclausesincomplexsentencesofKhmer?
(3)Whichcoreferentialcombinationsappearinwhichjuncture-nexustypes?HowistheinteractionbetweenthelinkagerelationsandNPcoreferentiality?

Withregardto(1),thisdissertationexaminedthelinkagerelations(“juncture-nexustypes”)ofKhmercomplexsentencesinanefforttoanswerhowlinkageswhichappearsimilartooneanotherdifferfromoneanother.TheclassificationofKhmercomplexsentenceswasbasedonthesyntacticcriteriadevelopedinRoleandReferenceGrammar(“RRG”,FoleyandVanValin(1984),forinstance).AlthoughthecriteriawerebasicallyfollowingthoseofRRG,thisdissertationinsistedthatitisnecessarytosub-dividesyntactictestsintotwotypes,whichwerecalledinthisdissertationthe“middlepositiontests”andthe“edgepositiontests”.Accordingtotheresultsofbothofthesetwotests,thisdissertationfoundoutthatthejuncture-nexustypesofKhmercomplexsentencesshoweddifferentpicturesfromthoseofRRG;thatis,theRRG’s“three-phasenexusdistinction,i.e.,“coordination”,“subordination”,and“cosubordition,isinsufficient,anditisnecessarytointroduceanewnexustype,i.e.,“transordination.”
Withregardto(2),thisdissertationexaminedcoreferentialrelationsofNPsincomplexsentencesofKhmer,withtheaimtofindouttheholisticviewofthesystemofcoreferentialrelationsKhmer.Althoughthepreviousstudiesmainlyconcentrateonlyonsubject–subjectcoreferentialcombinations,thisdissertationinvestigated346logicallypossiblecoreferentialcombinations.Theexaminationwasexhaustiveanddetailed,withamethodologyoriginallydevelopedinthisdissertation.Amongthe346logicallypossiblecoreferentialcombinations,54coreferentialcombinationswereactuallyobservedinthecorpus,whichshowedthatthescopeoftheexaminationofpreviousstudieshadbeensolimitedthattheyhadmissedthereality.
Withregardto(3),thisdissertationexaminedtheinteractionof(1)and(2),withtheaimtofindoutwhatkindofcoreferentialcombinationsappearinwhichjuncture-nexustypes.Itprovidedexamplesofeachofthe54coreferentialcombinationsobservedinthecorpus,examinedthedistributionsofthe54coreferentialcombinationsinthejuncture-nexustypes,andextractedtheircharacteristics.Thecoreferentialcombinationsarenotdistributedevenly,i.e.,somearelikelytoappearinrestrictedkindsofjuncture-nexustypes,whileothersarelikelytoappearinunrestrictedkindsofjuncture-nexustypes.ThisdissertationclassifiedKhmerjuncture-nexustypesintothreetypesintermsofthecharacteristicsofcoreferentialcombinationstheypermit.
