私の研究は、東アジア（主に中国・韓国・日本）における仏教寺院生活の展開、特に律宗と、中世中国において成立した戒律に対する注釈書の発展に焦点を当てている。これらの文献は、単なるインドから伝来した僧侶のルールを解説するものではく、その注釈を通じて仏教僧院における「生の形式」(form-of-life)が形成し、中世から近代に至るまで、東アジア全域の仏教制度の基盤を築いたことを明らかにすることを目的としている。

具体的には、私の研究は、この伝統の中心人物であった中国の学僧・道宣（596-667）が著した戒律文献に焦点を当て、これらはどのように成立したのか、なぜ成立したのか、そして、中国仏教や社会においてどんな影響があったのかを明かにすることを目的としている。これらの文献には僧尼の具体的な行動規範を示す実践的側面と、その行為の意義や理論を論じる思想的側面の双方が存在することを強調し、こうした思想が中国に形成されながらも、日本や韓国の仏教に及ぼした影響も検討している。

また、より広い視点から仏教に関する課題に取り組んでおり、特にアジア以外の仏教の受容や、デジタル技術およびAIを活用した仏教文献の理解と、教育の方法にも関心を持っている。

研究論文として「道宣『羯磨疏』における戒体説の背景について」（印度學佛教學研究、2017年）や “The Development of Ordination Platforms (jietan 戒壇) in China: The Translation and Interpretation of Sīmā in East Asia from the Third to Seventh Centuries.” In Simas: Foundations of Buddhist Religion (University of Hawai'i Press: 2022)などがある。

My research focuses on the development of Buddhist monasticism in East Asia, and in particular the development of the Vinaya school and of commentaries on monastic literature written in medieval (Tang-dynasty) China. My research emphasizes how this genre of literature did more than merely explain the rules for monks that were brought from India, but created the "form-of-life" that became the basis for Buddhist institutions throughout East Asia, throughout premodern period, and even to the present.

Specifically, my research focuses on the work of the Chinese monk Daoxuan (596-667), the central figure of this tradition, and aims to understand how and why his works were created, and the impact they had on Chinese Buddhism. I emphasize that these works have both a practical and a philosophical element---not only explaining the rules for how monks and nuns ought to behave, but also the reasoning behind these rules---and how these ideas came to influence Buddhism throughout East Asia.

Additionally, I work on a variety of areas related to Buddhism more generally, including on the reception of Buddhism outside Asia, and the development of digital and AI-based methods for understanding and teaching Buddhist literature.
