Ever since the devastating earthquakes hit Japan on March 11 we have been receiving numerous messages of support and solidarity from our friends and colleagues all over the world. Although these have been sent to faculty members their messages are in spirit meant for all the people who have been suffering in any way from the ongoing crisis. We therefore thought we would share them with as many people as possible, by posting them here, both in the original and in the translation provided by our graduate students. We offer our sincere sympathy to everyone who has suffered damage and is still going through the most trying time, and we thank all our colleagues and friends overseas who have shown tremendous support and friendship through these messages.

Komatsu Hisao
Former Dean
Faculty of Letters /Graduate School of Humanities and Sociology

We are extremely grateful to have received so many heartfelt words of encouragement from all over the world. As of today, a month after the earthquake, we will not be displaying any further messages here. Bearing your kind words in mind, we will henceforth do all within our power to rebuild what has been lost. We would like to extend our humble thanks once again for all your messages.

Ever since the terrible quake and tsunami, I've watched in horror what has been happening to your most beautiful island nation. My thoughts are with you and all you are going through.

Stuart Dybek

My heart goes out to you and to all of the Japanese people in this tragic times. Watching the videos of the destruction wrought by the earthquake and the Tsunami was one of the most horrifying sights I ever beheld, and I am old enough to remember bombs falling on my head in World War II. You have my solidarity, my love, and my deepest respect for your bravery in this moment of national catastrophe.

Everyone over here is following this very closely and is stunned by what you're going through, and you and all my friends over there are very much on my mind.

My thoughts and hopes are with you and your fellow students in these devastating days.

We watch the news with deep emotions of grief and concern and wish for success soon in containing the worst of the emergency so that your beautiful country can begin to reclaim a sense of security.

Students represent the future on this very small planet, connected across national borders and by the scholarship that you will share.

Please do whatever you can do to keep yourselves safe for that future.

I am so deeply saddened by the tragic events that have struck your country and your people.
My heart is breaking at the level of suffering.
Naturally echoes of Haiti's earthquake come to mind.
The toll of human suffering seems unlimited somehow.
Please know that our hearts and spirits are with you.
Haiti's heart and spirit are with you.
We weep for you and hope for you and pray for you.
We are also moved by your stamina and resilience.
I am attaching this video which was made by an acquaintance in Haiti.

Haiti Stands With Japan After Tsunami(Youtube)

I think it speaks more eloquently than I can what this moment feels like for all of us.
Indeed Haiti stands with you.
Haiti's children with your children
Haiti's women with your women
Haiti's men with you men
Haiti's mothers and fathers with your mothers and fathers.
One of the things we've talked about during my visits to Japan is our common respect for ancestors.
Our ancestors too are with yours

The people of Britain have been truly shocked by the tragedy in Tohoku and are thinking of, and praying for, all the people of Japan at this terrible time. But when we see the destruction, the death and the suffering in Tohoku, such words can seem easy, hollow and meaningless. But words are how we communicate and how we empathise, how we show our support and our solidarity, our compassion and our love for each other. How we rebuild, together.

David Peace, UK

To all my dear friends and colleagues at the University of Tokyo,

It is with great sadness that we have been watching the events unfold since the terrible earthquake on Friday. Our students have been making semba-zuru to raise money for the relief effort, while we have been working with those of our Japanese students whose families have been affected. In all things, we have kept the victims in our hearts and minds, and are prepared to welcome any of you who, for whatever reason, may wish to come to Toronto in the coming weeks.

In short, we stand with you in solidarity against the onslaught of natural and man-made forces that your community has faced, and may continue to face. You have friends here.

York University, Toronto.

I am still somehow left frazzled and speechless by the turns of the events in Japan. In front of such a reality, anything one wish to say seems so futile. I could never imagine this after having had such a moving visit with the students and faculty of the U of Tokyo's Center for Philosophy where I went to deliver a conference keynote address. I was truly devastated when I realized on the very day of my return from Tokyo to the US on March 10 (March 11 in Japan) that a second earthquake accompanied by a tsunami of such magnitude has hit the northeast coast of Japan. I have been following the news on this matter very closely, and aside from spending these last few days trying to contact all of my friends in Japan, I am profoundly concerned for them (and for us!) with the ongoing news on the nuclear meltdown. I did experience the aftershock of the first smaller earthquake offshore the day before my departure, and already at that time I could feel the hotel building swaying as I lost my equilibrium standing in my room on the 7th floor. I can hardly imagine what it must have been with the second earthquake on the 11th and the countless aftershocks.... and now, with the continuing threat of another forthcoming quake...I truly admire the spirit of survival and of mutual assistance happening among victims and survivors. My heart goes to them all, and to the people of Japan.

As a writer and teacher, I want to let all my colleagues at the University of Tokyo, all their students, and every citizen of Japan know that I’ve been following recent events with a feeling of anxiety, anguish, and immense compassion. Everyone I know follows the Japanese news with fierce attention. The suffering of the Japanese people breaks my heart, but their courage is inspiring to me. Please know that I am thinking of you, across the world in Saratoga Springs, New York. I bow my head in sympathy.

Every hour we get more news about the ever-increasing devastation brought the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear power plant breakdowns that have hit Japan. Every hour we also get glimpses of the dignity of the Japanese people, who are responding with courage and calm to these immense disasters. Though those of us far away from you can only respond in practical terms with donations to the Red Cross, Catholic Relief Services and reputable service organizations, please be aware that our thoughts and prayers are also with you as you survive and mourn and then begin to rebuild your resilient and much-loved nation.

My dearest thoughts and prayers goes directly to you, your families, your friends, and the whole People of Japan
O’smon Usoq, Yer Qattiq today
Japan is hurt, and I feel hurt
I have no words to translate my feelings
I’m thinking to you, each of you, all of you
I cannot imagine how much present times are harsh and fearful
Yet, I know that the People of Japan will overcome adversity, like they always did in the past
I wish each of you will remain steadfast amidst all the challenges of coping with the tragedy
People of Japan are courageous and resilient, noting can destroy that

On Thursday night, we opened a package from a dear friend in Hokkaido. We went to sleep thinking of her, and of Japan, and how much we look forward to taking our daughter to visit one day. On Friday morning, we woke up to the news of the earthquake and the tsunami. I don't know what to say. I wake up in the middle of the night, to check the news online. I wish that there was some real way to offer help. All of you are in my thoughts, constantly.

Watching disaster from afar is always a curious experience. The onlooker is not immediately effected. Daily life goes on for us, and yet, there are the daily images in the papers and on television and countless stories about what is happening in Japan now, a country that has been literally shaken from beneath and deluged by water. Untold numbers of people are dead and others homeless, lost, and traumatized. It is the imagination that creates solidarity—the sense that we are you, too. We are all vulnerable to the sudden, horrible rupture in time, to the event that shatters ordinary life and changes it forever. And because we know this, we are with you entirely, unshakably, we are with you.

I wish to extend my sincere condolences to the entire people of Japan and to the families of those who lost their dear ones during the tragic events caused by earthquake and tsunami followed by the nuclear radiation leaking from the plant in Fukushima. I hope Japanese people will overcome this terrible period and get back on their feet soon! Our prayers are with you!

It's hard to know what to say in the face of the destruction, the suffering, and the anxiety that this earthquake, the tsunami, and the Fukushima plant have visited upon Japan. It's hard to know what to say, as well, in the face of the selflessness, the warmth, and the courage we have seen over the past week: not just the workers struggling to prevent the situation at the plant from getting out of hand, but the way ordinary people throughout Japan have been coming together, cooperating, initiating the long process of recovery and reconstruction.
One thing I can say, though, is that the second kind of speechlessness is much stronger than the first. And I know the efforts people in Japan are making now will prove to be stronger than the devastation, too. That strength is wonderful. I hope with all my heart that life returns, as soon as possible, as much as it will, to normal.

Dear Japanese people!

We have been shocked by the tragedy which has happened in your country and with indefatigable attention we watch that at you occurs. We admire by your currage and power!
All of us worry about you and we pray for that you with the least losses left this situation. People try to render the feasible help, to express the sympathy words, many bring to Japanese embassies flowers, toys, notes with sympathy words.
We wish you patience, courage and power to cope with accident consequences...
You were and remain the great nation, whose qualities cause admiration and respect! And from beauty of the nature and culture grasps breath!
We support you and we wish you all good!"

All my thoughts and sympathy are with the Japanese people, whose exceptional courage, strength of character and sense of solidarity in this time of natural disaster I so deeply admire.
I am particularly thinking of my colleagues at Tohoku University in Sendai, with whom I spent the last week of February.
I'd like to express here all my gratitude for their kindness in making my stay as fruitful and pleasant as possible. How could I imagine that such a disaster was about to occur and I was to become shocked and saddened a few days later...
My heart is with them and I send them my warmest thoughts and wishes.

Dear Colleagues,

Everybody in France saw with intense emotion and great sadness the disaster caused by the earthquake, the tsunami and the destruction of the Fukushima NPP. Then, I would like to send you my sympathy and compassion. I have never gone to Japon, but my nearest colleagues and friends (Stéphane Dudoignon, Alexandre Papas, Thierry Zarcone and so on, working, like me, on Central Asia) always talked about your home so warm and told me so much of your scientific work .
Also, I want to express my solidarity and ask you not to hesitate to call me if you need books or materials of any kind, if they were destroyed or damaged, if it can help students and teachers.

This morning, the information about Fukushima NPP we have learned were more optimistic : the situation was stable and that raised hopes the next reactor coolant could.
So, I wish and I expect a rapid improvement of the situation in your unfortunate country.
With all my condolences to all those who died so suddenly and too early.

Dear Professor Komatsu,

There is very little that I can say, write or do that will make any difference in the wake of this terrible tragedy, but I would like you and all my academic colleagues in Japan to know that I am thinking of you constantly. I was privileged to spend five months in Sapporo last summer, and left with an enormous respect for your country and its scholarship, and many very happy memories. Japan has given a great deal to me, and I hope to be able to repay that debt properly some day.

Yours sincerely,

We stand ready to assist you and your colleagues in any way we can in the difficult months ahead.

Dear Komatsu sensei,

Let me briefly introduce myself: my name is Gulnara Shalpykova and I am from Kyrgyzstan.

Recently, I received information about your initiative "to collect and publish the messages ... in sign of solidarity". I decided to send you a link of the Condolence Book, where people of Kyrgyzstan express their words of heartfelt support and sincere sympathy (http://kg.akipress.org/news:341891). The Book has been published online and updated on 21st March 2011 by AKIpress Information Agency.

PS: Using this opportunity, I take the liberty of asking you to forward my information to any organisation in Japan, which deals with refugees from the eastern coast. I do understand that many Japanese will not leave their country and will fight to the end for Japan's future. Nevertheless, I am offering my hand - I have a room (10 sq. m) available in my 3-room flat located in the centre of Bishkek (the capital of Kyrgyzstan). Of course, my country is far from being a paradise and this small room is not a presidential suite but still water, electricity and heating are available!

If you have any questions or require more information, please do let me know!

With warm regards from Kyrgyzstan,

My dear Japanese colleagues,

Everyday I watch TV news to follow the situation in Japan. I feel very sorry to watch all the news about the aftereffect of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. It's hard to believe such disaster happened. It's really sad that so many people lost their lives. I wish you and your family are all safe and I believe the Japanese people will overcome all the difficulties. Please accept my sincere condolence and my respect for all Japanese who are trying their best to recover from the catastrophe.

Dear Japanese scholars and colleagues,

Let me express my deep sadness about the terrible consequences of the earthquake, tsunami as well as the dramatic events unfolding at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant. I am deeply saddened by the terrible loss of human life in such a terrible natural disaster. I hope that all will be resolved well for the nuclear power plant in Fukushima with no consequences for the people of Japan and around the world. This just reminds us that we need to find other alternatives to nuclear energy, because we can no longer live under the threat of radiation poisoning somewhere in the world that can have a negative impact upon the lives of everyone around the world. I personally hope there will not be any more considerations for the construction of the nuclear power plant in Mongolia, because if the works in this direction do proceed then there will be enough resistance within Mongolia and outside world to stop it.

The people of Japan,

I truly admire your strength, and wish you a quick recovery from the consequences of the earthquake and tsunami. I am always with you in my thoughts and actions.

Sincerely yours,

Dear Colleagues and Friends in Japan,

The heartbreaking disaster of Japan has shaken the whole world including my small country in the Caucasus - the Republic of Georgia.

Even far from this region, the earth tremor has exerted great sadness and anxiety on every citizen of Georgia including my friends and colleagues affiliated to different universities, research centres and organisations. We have been extremely moved by this terrifying human cost of earthquake and tsunami in Sendai area and this disaster has simultaneously become inseparable part of our traumatic consciousness. These events have once more reminded us of how fragile life can be and how every human in the earth should unite in solidarity of each other in order to survive as a whole.

Yesterday, the group of Georgians have organized solidarity action in front of the Embassy of Japan in Tbilisi with the title GeOpen. This action aimed to reach out the voices of compassion to the victims as well as to survivors of the catastrophe in Japan. With this symbolic action, Georgians wanted to express that ongoing sufferings of Japanese people have entered their homes as well as their hearts and that they feel extreme sympathy for those who currently feel hopeless in Japan.

Finally, with this modest letter of compassion from tiny country of Georgia, I hope to contribute to the global wave of support to the people of Japan. In these difficult times, I will continue hoping and praying that Japan will soon overcome this tremendous physical and psychological shock and persevere in providing each of us with its creative and inexhaustible energy.

Our thoughts are constantly with you,

Sincerely,

Dear Prof. HISAO KOMATSU,

Accept my deepest empathies in connection with the happened natural disaster in Japan and failure in Fukushima's nuclear plant which have caused dramatic and tragically consequences for many and many people. The information and television news from Japan worry heart and all that is possible – only to express the emotions and feelings, compassion, solidarity and sympathy, but at the same time confidence that all heavy material destructions will be revived. Japan always associates with ancient spiritual culture and strength of spirit, high intelligence and wisdom...

Please accept my condolences on the disaster that occurred in your country. At the same time I want to express on behalf of my countrymen, Altai, the sincere admiration for the courage and nobility of the Japanese. Talking about it all my friends - we understand how hard it is to your people. But those people whom we see on television, behave in the terrible and stress tense days bravely and honorably. Altai is well understood the situation and feelings of your people. In autumn 2003, we have, in the Altai Mountains, it was an earthquake measuring more than 8 points. But we had no casualties and great damage, because in the Altai Republic only 1 city with a population of 55,000 people. Altai consider their homeland alive.
We pray to the spirits of the Altai and ask for the welfare of mother earth - because of its well-being extended to us, her children. On behalf of my countrymen I wish peace to souls departed to another world! I wish you courage and patience to live! Altai people along with you! We send the power of our love for our common planet Earth, the force of sympathy to the Japanese people! We are praying for you all!

My dear friends!

It is very difficult to find proper words in such occasions to express our feelings.
In my mind Japan and Japanese people are associated with cleanliness, open-heartedness, kindness and softness, dignity and nobility. That is that I found out, when I spent three most beautiful in my life spring months in Sendai and since then always retain in my memory. In march -may 1998 I was affiliated to the Center of Interdisciplinary Studies at Tohoku University and worked with Prof. Kimura. I was pleasantly surprised by their purely Asian hospitality and kindness, national traditions and customs that Japanese didn’t loose even in their post-industrial period of development. Moreover, I was astonished finding much in common between Japanese and Uzbek people and was struck hearing an Uzbek makom (genre of a classic Uzbek song) in one of the Sendai small restaurants. Our Uzbekistani lecturers, touching cultural questions, always tell their audience about Japan as a model worthy to follow in our work and life. It is especially sad now to hear about such a tragedy, which happened in your motherland. I feel deep sorrow about the tragic events and human cost of the earthquake and tsunami in the Sendai area and all over Japan. I hope that my Japanese friends, colleagues and their families will quickly recover physically and psychologically from this tragedy however difficult to do it. Always remember that you are not alone, we join the ranks of millions of your friends and always ready to help you!

To all Japanese peoples.
No one country can be prepared for such terrible catastrophe.
We all was completely shocked by this terrible news and its consequences. Personally i have friends in Tokyo and Chiba. I was so down that i cant do anything to help. Now is new additional problem due to Fukushima Nuclear Plant. I dont now why God send so much suffer and ordeal to Japanese people.
But when i see how Japanese people trying to resolve those problems, with unimaginable strength - once again i convince myself that Japanese - is unique nation with ultimate power to life. God, please give the force and faith to all people in Japan to be strong. We with you with all our thoughts.

Dr. Markus Hallensleben
Associate Professor・University of British Columbia

I was shocked when I first heard about the terrible earthquake, and my thoughts are with all of you, and all people in Northern Japan who had no chance to escape, or who had to suffer from this catastrophe. While following the admirable energetic and cooperative efforts to care for the victims and to rebuild the devastated parts of the country, I am also deeply concerned about the nuclear crisis, which, according to the Austrian Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics, can meanwhile be compared to Chernobyl (http://www.zamg.ac.at/aktuell/), and hope that a solution can soon be found in order to avoid an even broader and long-term suffering. Since there is not much - except a donation with one of the major relief organizations such as the Red Cross – I can do as a scholar from far away, who will never forget the great support and friendship that I received during my work at the German Department of the University of Tokyo, I am sending my deepest sympathy to all of you. Please feel free to, and also let all former students and colleagues know, that they should not hesitate to contact me for any further support needed, be it now or in the future.

Warm wishes,

Words do not suffice to express the horror and sadness we feel because of the disaster your wonderful country has been exposed to. At the same time I want to express my admiration for the calmness displayed by the Japanese people in spite of the difficult time they are going through. Even if some wounds will never heal, I wish the Japanese society and my Japanese friends will recover as soon as possible.

The news reports suggest that you and all your students and colleagues in the Tokyo area should be safe; but such a catastrophe must be affecting you all in ways I can hardly imagine, and many must have family and friends in the areas most devastated. I just wanted to let you know that I'm thinking of you.

If I may say one thing, it strikes me as odd to say that the Japanese have a hard time imagining disaster or things beyond the ordinary. After all, post-war Japanese cultural expressions are filled with highly imaginary treatments of post-apocalyptic scenarios.

What is missing is a stronger culture of hope. I agree with you here.

We have the same problem. Our political discourse has become coarse and stupid because deconstruction has left a gaping no-man’s land in our educational curricula. The arts and humanities have backed away from their earlier role of articulating what a good life might be. We didn’t like the modern version, so we attacked it. We’ve agreed not to agree, and this is a victory of sorts. But this does not free us from addressing the need to learn together about what it is that makes life good.

We in the arts and humanities, must back away from theory a bit, and get back to teaching our students what is worthwhile and what is not. We need humility of the sort that natural disasters give us.

My heart goes out to the suffering people of Japan.

We should put together an international conference on such topics.

The Tsunami has carried off a lot of innocent victims, but it will bring Japan a huge wave of the world's blessings; and the Earthquake has destroyed only Japanese nuclear power station, but it does not put out the energy of Japanese people forever!

I was stunned to hear about the horrible news on Japan's national disaster. I sincerely hope that you and your family are safe and sound, and that no loss was caused to your relatives, students and colleagues. Spinoza said that we should strive to understand the chain of causality in nature without anguish or repent; but the heart cannot accept this advice when so much unjustified loss is caused to our dear friends, to our second home. I humbly send my deepest prayers and condolences to the Japanese people, and - from what I saw during my stay in Japan - I am certain that the mighty nation of Japan will prevail over this disaster.

sincerely yours

Dear Japanese friends, sisters and brothers,

The whole world has been shocked by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. We all feel sympathy and sorry for the Japanese nation that has always been going with pride and courage through all the difficult times in its history. Despite religion, race and nation, we all stand next to Japanese people and pray for them. We hope and believe that you will overcome all these difficulties with patience and wisdom.

God bless you and may all those innocent victims of this disaster rest in peace.

You are NOT alone!

I am writing on behalf of my family and friends to express our deepest sympathies and condolences to all people affected by this devastating catastrophe. We have been closely following all the news on the unfolding events and were indeed crushed with the view of overwhelming consequences that have struck Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures. Our prayers are with all the people of Japan, even with those who were not directly affected. In addition to that please let me express my deepest admiration by the calmness, dignity and conscience shown by the people in this tense and tragic times.

With the most sincere compassion,
