The Department of Sociology conducts education and research in sociology, a major area of specialization in the social sciences. Sociology, which was established as a specialized field in the mid-19th century, now encompasses numerous subfields such as family, regional and urban, industrial and labor, medical and welfare, international, environmental, cultural, and historical sociology, and addresses social issues that are becoming more diverse every day. Another characteristic of this department is the active attempts at theoretical, empirical, and historical approaches to new social problems that do not fit into traditional subfields. For education at the undergraduate level, instructors who specialize in cultural policy and social anthropology, adjacent areas of sociology, join us from the Department of Cultural Resources Studies and Department of Korean Studies to offer seminars (sociology seminars). For graduate-level education, faculty members of the Institute of Social Science, Interfaculty Initiative in Information Studies, and Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies also teach courses related to sociology.
