Tokoro Research Laboratory is a small research laboratory located in Tokoro-cho, Kitami City, on the northeastern coast of Hokkaido, facing the Sea of Okhotsk. This region has long been known as a site of important ancient ruins, and the Faculty of Letters of the University of Tokyo has been conducting archaeological research here for over half a century. Today, this facility works in close collaboration with Kitami City organizations to promote regionally integrated research and educational outreach activities. The educational programs offered to students include field archaeology training, museum studies training, experiential activity programs, and experiential seminars for first-year undergraduates. Additionally, public lectures and archaeological site tours are held regularly, and the Tokoro Gallery of Archaeological Finds is open year-round, where visitors can view excavated materials.
