Social psychology is an empirical science that studies the dynamic interdependent relationships between people's behavior in social settings, the underlying mental processes, and the sociocultural underpinnings of that behavior. The department’s research covers a wide range of topics including the cognition and understanding of social situations and the information processing processes that support them; interpersonal behaviors such as helping, aggression, cooperation, and empathy; group and organizational behaviors such as the formation of norms and public opinion, leadership, and group decision making; and cultural and historical influence processes. Fundamental findings are also being applied to elucidate various contemporary social events and phenomena such as issues surrounding politics, aging, and the Internet.
