The Department of French Language and Literature focuses on teaching and researching the French language, as well as literature and thought written in French. French linguistics is the study of the French language, and its scope includes French speech (phonetics, phonology), word and sentence form (syntax, morphology), content (semantics), and history (history of the English language). Literature and thought written in French refers to literature and thought that originated in the French Republic and in French-speaking countries in Europe and beyond. The main subjects are poetry, fiction, drama, essays, criticism, and historical narratives. Various linguistic and expressive activities about human society, from film and popular music to political and economic theory, are also considered.

Teaching staff

Masanori TSUKAMOTO (Professor) French literature, French-speaking literature

Courses taught: Modern and contemporary literature of France and the French-speaking world, Literary arts such as poetry and fiction
The lectures discuss not only genres, but also problems relating to avant-garde and arrière-garde in 20th-century literature, and the relationship between literature and images (photos, movies, etc.).
 

Shuichiro SHIOTSUKA (Professor) French literature

Courses taught: Modern and contemporary French literature
He is particularly interested in various language experiments in contemporary literature and the relationship between literature and its adjacent fields (historical narrative, urbanism, etc.). He also engages in creative writing.
 

Kenta OUJI (Professor) French literature, History of French thought

Courses taught: History of French thought from the early modern period to the present day
He is interested in the history of early modern social thought and contemporary philosophy and critical theory. Lectures are based on close readings of texts.
 

Raoul DELEMAZURE (Associate Professor) French language and literature

Courses taught: Deriving from his interest in contemporary literature and literary theory, he teaches courses in general French literature and on improving operational skills in reading, writing, and speaking French. All classes are conducted in French.
