The Department of French Language and Literature focuses on teaching and researching the French language, as well as literature and thought written in French. French linguistics is the study of the French language, and its scope includes French speech (phonetics, phonology), word and sentence form (syntax, morphology), content (semantics), and history (history of the English language). Literature and thought written in French refers to literature and thought that originated in the French Republic and in French-speaking countries in Europe and beyond. The main subjects are poetry, fiction, drama, essays, criticism, and historical narratives. Various linguistic and expressive activities about human society, from film and popular music to political and economic theory, are also considered.
