Research Area

French Literature and Thought

1) 18th Century French Philosophy

I study the authors of so-called “French Enlightenment” (Montesquieu, Rousseau, Diderot, etc.), with particular focus on their political and economic theory and their historiography. In recent years, I have been particularly interested in reconsidering 18th century philosophy in relation to the Early modern philosophy since the 17th century.

2) French thought in the second half of the 20th century

I study the authors of the so-called “French Theory” (or “Contemporary Thought” in Japan) (Althusser, Foucault, etc.), with a particular focus on their critical relationship to divers currents of Marxism.

3) Relationship between Modern Japanese Literature and Western Culture

I study also how historically the authors of modern Japanese Literature have received and reacted to their contemporary Western culture in their proper work.
