Ancient Chinese History
1) History of the Book in Medieval China
My research examines the formation and development of leishu (類書) in medieval China. The medieval period saw a remarkable increase in the number of books. As a traditional form of Chinese encyclopedic writing, leishu reflects changing ways of organizing and preserving knowledge. By studying their compilation, structure, and circulation, I seek to clarify how knowledge was organized, preserved, and transmitted during this period.
2) History of Medieval China
Taking the compilation of leishu as a point of departure, I examine intellectual activity within aristocratic society in medieval China. This research explores how aristocratic elites collected and reshaped knowledge, how it functioned as a medium of social exchange, and how it contributed to aristocratic identity. I also examine how knowledge was expressed in literary composition, historical writing, and ritual practice in order to better understand the relationship between cultural activity and political authority in medieval Chinese society
