The Department of Chinese Language and Chinese Literature focuses on teaching and researching Chinese linguistics and literature. The former covers the study of characters, phonology, semantics, grammar, and pragmatics, from Ancient Chinese to modern Chinese. The latter is divided into classical and modern and contemporary literature, with research interests including poetic verse, prose, novels, and drama, as well as Taiwanese literature, Hong Kong literature, Chinese minority literature, film, and television drama.

Katsuya ONISHI (Professor) Chinese Linguistics

Research fields: Old Chinese grammar, Chinese writing studies
Courses taught: His seminars involve reading classical Chinese documents and Chu script excavated materials from the Warring States period, and his lectures discuss old Chinese grammar and the history of Chinese characters.
