Research Area

1) History of Japanese Ethical Thought

Before the emergence of Western philosophy and ethics in the 19th century, the Japanese archipelago has already had a long history of ethical thoughts: on one hand, it has cultivated its relatively original ethical thought such as Bushidō and Shintō, on the other hand it has been deeply influenced by the foreign intellectual traditions such as Buddhism and Confucianism. One aim of my research is to inquire about both its originality and cross-culturality.

2) Intellectual History of the Early-modern Period of Japan

Among the abundant culmination of Japanese ethical thought, my study is especially focusing on the intellectual discourses produced during the Tokugawa period (17-19th century), including Confucianism, Nativism (Kokugaku), and Bushidō. Not only did they prepare Japan's modern and contemporary intellectual trend, but contain its original possibility.
