Modern and Contemporary Western Ethics and Philosophy

1) Ludwig Wittgenstein

A research subject that Furuta focuses on particularly. He is attempting to grasp the overall picture of Wittgenstein’s early and later thought.

2) Contemporary Anglo-American Ethics

Examining the discussions of Anglo-American philosophers influenced by Wittgenstein, such as Stanley Cavell, Bernard Williams, and Donald Davidson.

3) Modern German Philosophy and Turn-of-the-Century Viennese Thought

Investigates the influence of thinkers like Goethe, Schopenhauer, and Karl Kraus on Wittgenstein and explores the perspectives that emerge from this influence.

4) History of Ethical Thought

Engages in a retrospective examination of the history of ethical thought from ancient times to the present, focusing on broad themes such as “fortune” and “skepticism.”

5) Philosophy of Language

Explores the nature and significance of words having multiple meanings or understanding words in a multidimensional manner.

6) Philosophy of Action (Theory of Action)

Examines various topics related to the nature of “intention” and “will” in actions, the meaning of unintentional actions, and the responsibility for actions without fault. Also conducts individual research on the act of “apology” as an application of theoretical principles of action.

7) Philosophy of Mind

Investigates the characteristics of mental concepts such as sensation, emotion, and will, and explores the meaning of the mind for humans from perspectives different from those of natural and social sciences.
