Research Areas

Islamic Studies

1) Research on Sunnite Islamic Thought

Matsuyama studies Sunnite Islamic thought, with a focus on theology and jurisprudence. His doctoral dissertation explored “Islamic jurisprudence (Fiqh) for Muslim minorities,” analyzing the discursive features of this field by comparing theories of various proponents. He also examines issues related to the concept of “faith” (īmān) in Maturidism. His research interests include both classical doctrines and contemporary interpretations by modern Muslims.

2) Perception of Islam in Japan

In contemporary Japan, xenophobia and anti-religious sentiment are on the rise. Matsuyama is concerned about the possibility of Islamophobia emerging as a mixture of these two forms of prejudice and has written critiques on several issues related to Japan's perception of Islam.
