Research Areas

Northeast Asian Archaeology

1) Research on the History of Hokkaido Island from an Archaeological Perspective

A study of the historical processes leading to the formation of Ainu culture from an archaeological standpoint. Special emphasis is placed on the Epi-Jomon, Okhotsk, and Satsumon cultures, which followed a different historical trajectory from that of the Honshu region.

2) Research on Exchanges between the Japanese Archipelago and Northeast Asia

Among the various historical exchange routes connecting the Japanese archipelago and the Asian continent, research in this area focuses on the “northern exchange route” through Hokkaido and Sakhalin, examining changes over time, the background, and the societal impact.

3) Research on “Pit-Dwelling Group Sites Remaining in Depressions” in Northeast Asia

A study of “pit-dwelling group sites remaining in depressions” in areas such as the Russian Far East, Hokkaido, and the southern Kuril Islands. This research clarifies the differences between regions and time periods, as well as the background to how the remains were preserved.
