The Department of Death and Life studies and Practical Ethics explores the nature of human death and also covers related issues, from the perspective of applied ethics. Faculty members come from diverse backgrounds and engage in interdisciplinary research.

Norichika HORIE [Death and Life Studies, Applied Ethics, Religious Studies]

Research fields: Death and life studies, Spirituality studies
Courses taught: In addition to the aforementioned themes, he is also in charge of seminars for close readings on environmental thought. This is because of his involvement with the “Sustainability and Humanities” base and multidisciplinary exchange seminar “Sustainability and Humanities” (research presentations by faculty members in a relay format). Introduction to Death & Life Studies is also a relay-style course co-taught by several faculty members, who try to devise a theoretical foundation that is familiar with and bridges the various fields of discussion.

Akihito SUZUKI [History of Medicine, British History]

Research fields: History of psychiatry, History of infectious diseases
Courses taught: Lectures focus on the triad of disease, the medical professional, and patient. Both lecture courses and seminars are conducted in English, and students are required to discuss and summarize the topics covered in English.
