The Department of Indian Languages and Literatures focuses on teaching and researching the languages and literatures of the Indian subcontinent from the 12th century B.C. to around the 15th century A.D. The linguistic research focuses mainly on Sanskrit. Sanskrit (Old Indo-Aryan) played a significant role in the history of the development of Indian languages and is also essential in Indo-European comparative linguistics. The Indian literature in this department is not limited to stories, poems, and plays (e.g., the Rgveda, the Mahābhārata, etc.) but also includes various scientific literature developed in ancient and medieval India, such as law, astrology, medicine, and history. In other words, Indian languages and the totality of the culture conveyed by Indian languages are the subject of study in this department.
