About International Humanities Project

The Graduate School of Humanities and Sociology at the University of Tokyo seeks to build extensive networks for the humanities both within Japan and internationally. One of our key goals is to share research originally produced in Japanese with the wider world by making it available in multiple languages. By providing an open space for collaboration, we aim to foster interdisciplinary discussions—such as those in world philosophy and world literature—and to generate new forms of humanistic insights together with scholars around the globe.

This project was launched in April 2023 as part of the University of Tokyo’s broader initiative to internationalize scholarship in the humanities. It supports collaborative research with overseas scholars, the organization of international conferences, and a range of other activities that promote research and education on a global scale. Here, “internationalization” does not simply mean using English; rather, it involves creating a genuinely pluralistic environment for cultural exchange and establishing a platform on which humanistic scholarship can flourish worldwide.

Since April 2025, the project has been supported by the Uehiro Endowment for Future Generations, established through a donation from the Uehiro Foundation on Ethics and Education in commemoration of the University of Tokyo’s 150th anniversary.
