Research Areas
Ancient Japanese History
1) Kami and Religious Beliefs
Sugita conducts research on rituals and religious beliefs in ancient Japan, with a particular focus on Amaterasu アマテラス, Ise Grand Shrine, and the deities and rituals performed at the imperial court. The goal of his research is to capture a concrete image of these rituals and beliefs, which are directly connected to the existence of the emperor in ancient times, and to revise the conventional understanding of ancient kami worship based on these findings.
2) Imperial Succession Rites
Building on his investigation of religious practices (#1), this research focuses on rituals and concepts related to imperial succession, such as the enthronement and accession ceremonies, Ise Saio 伊勢斎王 system, and inherited treasures. It examines how the legitimacy and authority of the emperor in ancient times were ensured from the perspective of rituals and ideology, while also considering the changes that occurred through the medieval period.
