My research focuses primarily on twentieth-century Austrian literature, with particular emphasis on the period following the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. I am interested in how Austrian cultural identity was redefined in response to successive political ruptures, from the First Republic and the Nazi period to the Allied occupation and the Second Republic. I also examine how Austrian writers engaged with these historical transformations and reflected on the problem of Austrian identity in their works. Authors central to my research include Ingeborg Bachmann, Heimito von Doderer, Thomas Bernhard, and Gerhard Fritsch.
