Research Areas

Early Japanese Literature

1) Reading Comprehension of Early Japanese Literature

My research focuses on ancient Japanese literary works, primarily the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki. I pursue an understanding of these works based on their inherent themes and the differences between them. From this perspective, I interpret the myths, narratives, and poems contained within these texts. Furthermore, based on the insights gained, I am compiling annotated editions of Nihon Shoki (New Annotations on Nihon-shoki with modern Japanese Translation : The first and second volumes, Kodansha 2021, 2026, to be continued).

2) Researches on Reception History of Ancient Lapanese Literature

In addition to the above, research is conducted into how ancient Japanese literature was received and continued to live on in later periods. Particular focus is placed on analysing narratives and commentaries that reworked the myths of the Nihon Shoki and Kojiki (Norinaga and Sandai-ko: The Mythological Worldview of Early Modern Japan, Kasama Shoin 2005, Yoshitusune's Adventure: A Cultural History of Tales of Heroes and Otherworlds, Kodansha 2012).
