Research Areas

Japanese Early Modern Literature

1) Gokan

Through the analysis of gokan, illustrated popular novels published in 19th-century Edo, she explores various aspects of early modern entertainment culture and its continuity with contemporary culture. Her recent publication is Gokan of Bakumatsu: The End and Rebirth of Edo Literature (Iwanami Shoten, 2024).

2) Rakugo

She conducts research on the works of rakugo storyteller Sanyutei Encho, who was active during the late Edo and early Meiji periods. A recent paper by Yukiko Sato is titled “Bunshichi Mottoi and Edo-Tokyo” (in Edo-Tokyo Created by Rakugo, edited by Yuko Tanaka, Iwanami Shoten, 2023).
