Research Area

Heritage Studies, Public Archaeology

1) Heritage Studies: I investigate the meaning, representation and use of the past in the modern world.

2) Public Archaeology: I examine the interrelation between archaeology and society.

The question underpinning my research is: “What does the past mean to human beings”? Guided by this big question, and drawing on theories taken from a diverse range of studies, particularly anthropology, archaeology, history and human geography, I carry out case studies in different parts of the world. My current research projects address: the interrelation between local people and the archaeological excavation of the Villa augustea in Somma Vesuviana, Italy; biographies of kofun (ancient burial mounds in Japan); how we remember and forget past natural disasters; the formation and use of nostalgia in Asian cities; place memories in Kanda area, Tokyo; emotional and cognitive responses triggered by ruins.
