Japanese Classical Literature
1) Japanese Literature, Heian Literature, Late Antiquity Literature
2) The Tale of Genji, History of Narrative, Waka
The Tale of Genji is based on the ideas of the long narratives, poetry tales, and waka poems established before it, and is a product of voracious absorption of elements from diary literature, Chinese poetry, historical facts, and so on. My main research topics are the historical dynamics of this literary work, as well as the analysis of its structure and expression. I am also interested in the forms of thought and ideas among people during the Heian period, as well as the nuances of communication found in the exchange of waka.
My publications include Thoughts in ‘”Tale of Genji” (Kazama Shobō, 2002; Winner of the 5th Murasaki Shikibu Academic Prize), Waka Composed by Women: The Gift Songs of “The Tale of Genji” (Seikansha, 2008), Reading “The Tale of Genji” from a Male Perspective (Asahi Shinsho, 2008), Collection of Japanese Poets: Izumi Shikibu (Kasama Shoin, 2011), The Laws of Love Explained Through Heian Literature (Chikuma Primer Shinsho, 2011), Reconsidering “The Tale of Genji”: Methods of Lengthening and Deepening the Narrative (Iwanami Shoten, 2017), Waka Literature Series 50: The Tale of Two Hundred Poetic Competitions / Fuhō Waka Collection (Meiji Shoin, 2019; co-authored), Reading “The Tale of Genji” (Iwanami Shinsho, 2021), Waka Literature Series 5: Kokin Waka Shū (Meiji Shoin, 2021; co-authored), An Introduction to “The Tale of Genji” (Iwanami Junior Shinsho, 2023), and Do You Know the Author of “The Tale of Genji”?
