Art History
1) Japanese Art History, History of Medieval Painting, Yamato-e
Examining the stylistic developments of artists and schools that produced Yamato-e (including illustrated handscrolls, portraits, Buddhist paintings, paintings of Buddhist narratives, and folding screen paintings) based on the investigation of works, and clarifying the social significance of painting production by court nobles, samurai, and temples through the scrutiny of historical materials.
2) Art Collections and Patronage
Exploring the foundations of the creation of works of art through the movement of authors and works between urban and rural areas; issues of transcription, collection, and restoration in the early modern and modern periods; research on Japanese art works located overseas; and collaboration with related fields such as Japanese history, Japanese literature, and Buddhist studies.
3) Digital Humanities
Developing methods for comparative analysis of art works utilizing high-definition digital images.
