1) Theories in the study of religion
Critical reflections on major concepts and theories in the study of religion, focusing on comparative methods and the world religions paradigm within the global history of religions.
2) National/transnational history of the discipline
Envisioning the future through re-descriptions of the politics of science as observed in the historical development of the study of religion.
3) Religions and non-religiousness in the contemporary world
Integrating discussions on non-religious identities and secularity in the sociology of religion with studies of Japanese subcultures, including anime and fandom.
4) Education and the study of religion
Collaborating with international scholars to advance study-of-religion-based religious education, as opposed to explicit/implicit confessional or interfaith religious education.
