Japanese Modern and Contemporary Literature, Studies of Culture and Representation
1) The Problem of “Soul” in Contemporary Japanese Literature
This research area focuses on Kenzaburo Oe and also studies Haruki Murakami, Banana Yoshimoto, and Hiromi Kawakami. It investigates how the dimension of “soul” is represented in their works, taking into account the contemporary contexts of their writing. The goal is to reveal the intellectual history of the concept of “soul” in modern Japanese literature by cross-examining the efforts of these writers, who sensitively responded to social events and ideological trends and explored the issue of “soul” through their literary imagination.
2) Research on Kenzaburo Oe's Manuscripts
This research area involves a detailed examination of handwritten manuscripts and proofs from The Kenzaburo Oe Library (Faculty of Letters, The University of Tokyo), analyzing the process of additions and revisions from draft to final version. The goal is to uncover the subtle movements in Oe's creative process.
