Research Area

Modern Japanese Literature

1) History of the Organization of Genres in Modern Japanese Literature

I am especially interested in Haruo Sato (1892-1964), a Japanese writer active in both poetry and fiction, who also ingested new art theories through his experience in oil painting. By analyzing his works, I investigate how the concept of “realism” in modern Japanese literature has evolved under the influence of the field of fine arts.

2) The Formation of Views on Asia in Modern Japanese Writers

Based on solid evidence from field and document research, I am analyzing travel writings by Japanese modern writers who traveled Asian countries. In particular, I am engaged in a comparative study of the works by Sato Haruo, Tanizaki Junichiro, and Akutagawa Ryunosuke, who travelled China in 1920s.

3) Deciphering autographs to elucidate the process of the formation of literary works and the history of the literary world

I am analyzing a vast number of letters to Haruo Sato, a central figure in the literary world, in an effort to elucidate the unknown network of modern writers. I am also making efforts to preserve manuscripts, letters, and other autograph materials and to utilize them for social purposes.
