Summary
Major research interest is prehistoric archaeology in the Japanese archipelago. I mainly focus on the transitional process from Jomon cultural complex (16,000-2,400 cal BP) to Yayoi cultural complex (2,800 cal BP- 3rd Century), and clarify its historical significance. In addition, recent research topic (PI) is the process of sedentism in the beginning of Jomon period in relation to volcanic activities. Another pillar of my research field is ethnoarchaeological practice to gain theoretical and methodological knowledge contributing to the archaeology of complex hunter-gatherers.
Research Areas
1) Prehistoric archaeology in Japan: early farming, residential and social change, provenance analysis in relation to long-distance trade (red pigment, lacquerware, jasper, etc.) , complex hunter-gatherers, emergence of sedentism, tephra archaeology and Neolitization process
2) Ethnoarchaeology: pottery-making technique, Melanesian ethnography, ritual buildings and organizations, long-distance exchange
