Research Area
Buddhist Painting, Japanese Ancient Painting and Japanese Conservation Thinking.
1) Buddhist Painting.
My main research focuses on Buddhist paintings of the Heian period (794-1192) with a special focus on their relations to paintings of the Tang, Five Dynasties, and Song dynasties of China, and on the techniques, embellishments, and the context of their production related to rites and rituals.
2) Japanese Ancient Painting and Conservation Thinking
My former job at Bunkachō (Agency for the Cultural Affairs of the Government of Japan) was conservation and protection of mural paintings belongs to the tomb of Takamatsu-zuka and Kitora at 8th century. I also research on the techniques and meanings of tomb painting. And I have continued to think about the history and philosophy of conservation of Japanese painting from the historical view.
