Research Area

Japanese Linguistics, Dialectology, Sociolinguistics

1) Descriptive Linguistics of Japanese Dialects

I conduct descriptive linguistic research on various regional varieties of the Japanese language. My recent focus includes the dialects of Narada in Yamanashi Prefecture, Izumo, and Toyama.

2) Language Documentation and Archiving

The practice and methodological examination of linguistic documentation and archiving are essential for descriptive studies. I am actively involved in these activities for the dialects mentioned above.

3) Descriptive and Contrastive Studies of Grammatical and Semantic Categories in Japanese Dialects

I undertake descriptive and contrastive linguistic research on paradigms and functions of sentence-final particles, case markers, and information structure in various Japanese dialects.

4) Geo- and Sociolinguistics of Japanese Dialects

Japanese is known for gender differences in the use of personal pronouns and final particles, with significant regional variations as well. I am interested in these regional differences and their changes.
