The Department of Korean Studies focuses on education and research related to the culture and society of the Koreas. It incorporates various disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. Specifically, the program aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of Korean culture and society using theories and methods from history, linguistics, anthropology, sociology, and other disciplines.

Teaching staff

A Yutaka ROKUTANDA (Professor) History

Research fields: History of water transportation, History of financial systems, Maritime history, and Environmental history in pre-modern Korea with a focus on the Joseon Dynasty
Courses taught: Lectures cover the politics, economy, and society of the Joseon Dynasty. Seminars involve close readings of historical documents from the Joseon period written in Chinese.
 

B Hiroshi HONDA (Professor) Social and cultural anthropology

Research fields: Anthropology and historical ethnography of Korea; Anthropology and ethnography of the community, intimate sphere, family, and post-family
Courses taught: Lecture topics include an overview of Korean social and cultural anthropology and ethnography. In the seminars, students engage in heuristic readings of ethnographic and theoretical literature in anthropology and sociology, and explore ways to apply them to their own research topics.
 

C Sung Won KIM (Professor) Sociology

Research fields: Social issues and social policy theory with a focus on contemporary South Korean society
Courses taught: The lectures focus on social issues in South Korea with keywords such as inequality, gender, and an aging society with low fertility. In the seminars, students read relevant literature and report on the history, status, and characteristics of social problems and social policies in South Korea from an international comparative perspective.
 

Chiyuki ITO (Associate Professor) Linguistics

Research fields: Phonology, phonetics, and historical linguistics of Korean
Courses taught: The lectures cover topics including phoneme sequences, loanword adaptation, pitch-accent patterns, and acoustic phonological analysis and its methods in Korean. In the seminars, students read papers on the historical development and analogical changes of the Korean language.
 

Seo Youn CHO (Specially Appointed Associate Professor) Literature

Research fields: Modern and contemporary South Korean drama, Modern and contemporary South Korean visual literature
Courses taught: The lectures cover the history of South Korean cinema. Students also examine drama texts on major themes of South Korean society and culture, and learn about the latest research trends.
