The Department of Indian Philosophy and Buddhist Studies focuses on teaching and researching Indian philosophy, and also Buddhist studies from India, Tibet, China, Japan, and other regions. These academic disciplines are related to philosophy, ethics, history, religious studies, and Chinese philosophy, and research in these fields naturally involves an interdisciplinary element. Our department emphasizes in-depth reading of original texts in Sanskrit, Pali, Tibetan, Chinese, and other relevant languages. Most students go on to graduate school. As such, the distinctive feature of this program is that it emphasizes continuity between undergraduate and graduate education.
