The department of Occidental history focuses on research and education related to the history of the Occident (Europe and the United States). While our main subjects are the Mediterranean world (ancient Greece and Rome), Europe (including present-day Northern and Eastern Europe), and the Americas, it also includes the history of relationships with Asia, as the Occident expanded into other parts of the world since the modern era. In addition, history is a discipline concerned with all things past, and our department also emphasizes the study of history from various angles, such as cultural and environmental history, in addition to political and economic history.
