Public lectures begin!  

..... The Headquaters of the project starts "Public Lectures" on the Islamic World. The first one will be held on February 21, 1998 at University of Tokyo, where Profs. KOSUGI Yasushi and HIRAYAMA Kentaro will give lectures on the contemporary Middle East, reflecting upon the Luxor Incident in November 1997 and other related issues.

Joint Symposium on Civil Society was held ! 

..... Symposium on "Civil Society and Democratization in the Islamic World" was held on December 12-13, 1997 in Kurashiki, organized jointly by Units 1, 2 and 5.
..... There were more than 50 participants, and all enjoyed stimulating presentations and heated discussions in an interdisciplinary atmosphere.

Report of the symposium

Symposium on Al-Afghani Was Held on Nov. 15 ! 

..... Unit 1 of the Islamic Area Studies Project held its first annual symposium on Nov. 15, 1997. The theme of the symposium was "Reconstructing Al-Afghani." It commemorated the 100th anniversary of his death. There were five stimulating papers, and all participants enjoyed vivid discussion.

Symposium on Asia and Islam 

..... An international symposium on Asia and Islam was held in Kuala Lumpur on November 11 and 12, 1997, organized by the Japan Institute of International Affairs (JIIA) and the Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia (IKIM). Prof. Kosugi, the group leader of 1-A, attended the symposium, while he chaired one session, and read a paper on the OIC in another. The symposium was very successful and constructive.
..... He also informed the IKIM and other participants from many countries of our IAS project, and had very warm responses.
