No. NZN_01 Description Nishizakiyama Nishi Stone Circle (Area 2), stone circle No.1 (from the northeast) Photographed year 1951 Size Cabinet photographic plate Plate No. of the report Box No. H04_007 Comment Stone circle No.1 was composed of a standing stone and many round stones which were placed radially at the base of the standing stone with a diameter of 70-80 cm. According to the excavation report, there were stones stacked on the standing stone which were not captured in this photograph. However, it also was estimated that these stacked stones were not original remains but had been introduced through human activity, such as farming, later on. It requires attention that the stacked stones in PL.26-1 printed in Otoe are not located in stone circle No.1 but are southeast of No.1. Furthermore, No.1 is found on the right side of the PL. No. NZN_02 Description Nishizakiyama Nishi Stone Circle (Area 2), stone circle No.1 (from the southwest) Photographed year 1951 Size Cabinet photographic plate Plate No. of the report Box No. H04_001 Comment This photograph was taken of stone circle No.1 from the southwest, the opposite angle to NZN_01. The excavation in 1951 stopped on this step and continued under the standing stone the following year. -

This photograph shows the state after excavating the round stones around the standing stone (see NZN_01). According to Otoe, there also were about 20 stones under the round stones at the base of the standing stone. This photograph shows the state after excavating these round stones. The pit was found under the round stones of the lower layer. -

Photographed year 1952 Size Cabinet photographic plate Plate No. of the report Komai 1959: Fig. 43 Box No. H04_002 Comment The round-shaped pit measuring 0.9 m in the major axis, 0.8 m in the minor axis, and about 1 m deep was found underneath stone circle No.1. This photograph was taken at the bottom of the burial pit where stones where found. No artifacts were found in the pit. -

There were stacked stones in the area measuring approximately 1.5 m in diameter under stone circle No.2. After removing these stacked stones, it can be seen that the standing stones and flat stones are placed radially like in NZN_07. -

No. NZN_08 Description Nishizakiyama Nishi Stone Circle (Area 2), stone circle No.2 (from the northwest) Photographed year 1951 Size Cabinet photographic plate Plate No. of the report Box No. H04_009 Comment This photograph shows the excavation of the standing stones and the flat stones placed radially after removing the stacked stones under stone circle No.2. The standing stone was in the center and the flat stones were placed radially. There were also standing stones to the northeast and the southwest of the flat stone. Stone circle No.1 and its standing stone can be seen, reconstructed after the discontinuation of the excavation. -

It can be seen that there were some stones placed radially. Otoe reported that “although it seemed that there should be a pit next to the standing stone, no pits were found, such as a burial pit.” -
No. NZN_11 Description Nishizakiyama Nishi Stone Circle (Area 2), stone circle No.3 (from the northwest) Photographed year 1951 Size 35mm Plate No. of the report Box No. S7_06 Comment Stone circle No.3 is located approximately 4.5 m west of stone circle No.2. As this photograph shows, there were stacked stones here measuring approximately 1.5 m in diameter underneath stone circle No.3. According to Otoe, after removing the stacked stones, the stone circle was found. It was composed of standing stones and flat stones placed radially. -
No. NZN_12 Description Nishizakiyama Nishi Stone Circle (Area 2), stone circle No.3 (from the northeast) Photographed year 1951 Size 35mm Plate No. of the report Box No. S7_14 Comment This photograph was taken from the northeast at almost the same time as NZN_11. It shows the site just after the excavation of stone circle No.3 began, with the standing stone in the center and the stacked stones surrounding it. -
No. NZN_13 Description Nishizakiyama Nishi Stone Circle (Area 2), stone circle No.3 (from the northwest) Photographed year 1951 Size Cabinet photographic plate Plate No. of the report Box No. H04_010 Comment After excavating beyond what is shown in NZN_11, a standing stone was found in the center and flat stones were found to be placed radially. It can be seen that there was a low standing stone to the north of the standing stone in the center as well as slightly large stones on the east side of the flat stone which were placed radially. However, it is not sure because there was no remarking. According to Otoe, “although it seemed that there should be a pit next to the standing stone, no pits were found, such as a burial pit”, the same as stone circle No.2. -
