"Thinking of Contemporary Iran"
Mojtaba SADRIA (Chuo University)

Moderation and radicalism, along with Iranian nationalism and Islamic Shi'a fundamentalism, are the two most often come across dual categories used in the analysis of contemporary Iran. Though these kinds of categorization might help to understand some aspects of the Iranian polity, the over-simplification that they are based upon might also prevent observers from grasping neither the sense, nor the content of deeper transformations. There is need to take into consideration accumulated effects of major social changes of the twentieth century modernizing Iran in order to see the specificities of an emerging pluralistic society. The enlarged social political roles of Iranian women is one of the most relevant indicators of this possible modernity.

"Iran and Beyond: An Analysis of the Persian Gulf Area"
Kazuo TAKAHASHI (The University of the Air)

The Persian Gulf Area can be divided into (1) the countries on the Arabian Peninsula, (2) Iran and (3) Iraq. The four changes characterize today's Arabian Peninsula: (1) low oil prices, (2) increasing population, (3) the antagonism among the public against the U.S. troops stationed on their soil, and (4) emerging leaders of younger generations. These four trends could combine to bring a drastic change to the Arabian Peninsula.

The problem Iraq faces is that, whereas Saddam Hussein's dictatorial grip of power would keep Iraq from reconciling itself with the rest of the world, it is not obvious whether Iraq could maintain its domestic stability without him and his regime.

President Khatami was a product of the changing Iranian society. The easier availability of the elementary education since the revolution played an important role in bringing this societal change. U.S. policy toward Iran seems to be changing for two reasons. First, the fact that Khatami came into power questions the validity of the American perception that no moderate leaders exist in Iran. Second, the United States pays more attention to Iran than before since Iran is located on a commercial route for energy resources transported from Central Asia to the international market.
