| I have participated in the international conference on “The History of
Perestroika in Central Asia” held from 30 May–1June 2013 in Bishkek and
organized by Volkswagen Foundation and hosted by Aigine Cultural Research
Center, Bishkek. This conference attrached a number of schoalrs working
on the issues of reconsidering the heritage of perestroika in Soviet Union
and in Central Asia in particular. Interestingly, the program consisted
of panel sessions composed of presentations on various projects and panel
discussions which featured prominent figures who were actively involved
in the policy making of perestroika years. The number of participants of
the conference amounted to around 40 presenters and panelists which included
representatives of the US, European, Russian, Central Asian and the Japanese
research institutes and projects. It was a valuable event to reconsider
empirical evidence gathered in the course of fieldwork which will defenitely
contribute to our understanding of late Soviet era. |
