Comment | These artifacts were excavated together from a burial pit with the Utsunai Ⅱa type of pottery of the Early Epi-Jomon period. Since the pottery have flat rims and do not have appliqué decorations, they are understood to be older, of the Utsunai Ⅱa type. There are approximately 260 amber beads. Some of them are flower-shaped, while the others are disk-shaped and flat. A large quantity of amber beads was buried in one tomb in eastern Hokkaido during the first half of the Epi-Jomon period. Amber was considered valuable in Hokkaido during this period because they were from Sakhalin. These amber beads tended to be intentionally buried in certain specific tombs. |
