A course: Traditional religion and new religion: 78 participants

Places we will Visit:
Shinnyo-en, Emperor's Tomb, Mt. Takao, Yakou-in Temple

Congress venue at 8:00 ---- Highway----Shinnyo-en(2 hours)----Drive by the Emperor's Tomb
---- Lunch at a Hotel ----at the foot of Mt. Takao ---- Climb by cable tram---- Attend mystical service of 'Ogoma' at Yakuou-inTemple(30 minutes)----Visit the main temple----at the foot of Mt. Takao----19:15 return to the Venue.

Special Points Requiring your Attention:
1. We have been accepted as special guests by the Shinnyo-en religious organization, a new Buddhism denomination, on the special festival of the birthday of its founder. Professor Michael Pye will have a speech on our behalf. You are requested to wear jacket and to abstain from wearing unmatched clothing such as jeans, going bare-foot or wearing sandals.
2. Mt. Takao, a mountain in the suburbs of Tokyo, is famous for the mountainous Buddhist traditions called 'Shugen-do,' where monks commit ascetic discipline. As we will walk on roughly paved lanes for about 20 minutes, high-heeled shoes are not appropriate. Also, it can still be cold in the mountainous area and one should be equipped for coldness and rain.


B course: Shinto and Buddhism in Tokyo: 71 participants

Places we will Visit:
Meiji-Shrine, Yasukuni Shrine, Senso-ji Buddhist Temple.
Assemble at the main entrance of Takanawa Prince Hotel at 8:10.
Special lecturer: Professor Kunimitsu Kawamura

Time Schedule:
Venue at 8:30----Meiji Shrine(45minutes)----Visit Yasukuni Shrine and Yushu-kwan museum (2hours)----Lunch at KKR Hotel Tokyo----Visit Sensoji Temple Compound (Japanese traditional garden at Denpo-in residence and guest house of the arch-monk ----Main Hall of worship----Free time for shopping at Nakamise main street)----Assemble in the parking lot----Return to the venue at 18:00.

Information
Yasukuni-Shrine is the place where the dead spirits of war victims were collected and enshrined. The rite of calling the dead spirits can be grasped by the model of the rite and other materials housed in the Yushu-Kwan Museum, which is actually a kind of war memorial museum.
The Senso-ji Buddhist Temple complex and its main street, called "Nakamise," are expected to be
terribly crowded with visitors and we should be careful not to go astray.


C course: Kawasaki-Daishi and China town: 33 participants.

Places we will Visit:
Kawasaki-Daishi Temple, Kanayama-Shrine, Yokohama China Town, Yokohama Archives of History, Japanese Oversea Migration Museum, and Foreigners' Cemetery.
Assemble at the main entrance of Takanawa Prince Hotel at 7:50.

Time Schedule:
Venue at 8:10----Kawasaki-Daishi Buddhist Temple, attend the mystical rite called Ogoma(30 minutes)----Kanayama-Shrine and its phallus worship, which is newly connected with AIDS-patients----Yokohama China Town(including lunch)----Drive thru Foreigners' Cemetery----Yokohama Archives of History(30 minutes)----Japanese Oversea Migration Museum(1 hour)----Arrive at the venue at 17:00.


D course: One day Medieval Kamakura: 114 participants.

Places we will Visit:
Daibutsu (Big Statue of the Buddha), Koumyou-ji Temple (special Buddhist vegetarian Lunch), Tsurugaoka-Hachimangu Shrine, Kencho-ji Zen Temple, Engaku-ji Zen Temple.
Assemble at the main entrance of Takanawa Prince Hotel at 7:30.
Special lecturer: Professor Kenji Matsuo.

Time Schedule:
Venue 7:50----Daibutsu (visit inside and guest house, garden: Japanese tea and tea cakes will be served)(1hour)----Koumyou-ji Temple (Special vegetarian lunch 'Shojin-Ryori' with special performance of the dance of Nenbutsu-chanting)----Tsurugaoka-Hachimangu Shrine (Central Shrine of the City)----Kencho-ji Zen Temple (Visiting sacred precinct of the founder's tomb, Japanese tea will be served at the guest hall)(2hours)----Engaku-ji Zen Temple---- Return to Congress venue at 19:00.

Information:
As each place we will visit is expected to be very crowded on Sunday of the spring season and we are a large group of over 100 members with three buses, we should be careful to stay with our group at all times and not to go astray.
