PROPOSALS FOR PAPERS AND PRESENTATIONS

The Congress Secretariat of the JARS and the Congress Academic Program Committee (CAPC) welcome proposals for papers on any aspect of the study of religion. Papers may treat religious phenomena from any culture and historical period, and from a wide variety of academic disciplines, including philosophy, history, sociology, philology, anthropology, psychology, and iconography. The subject of a paper of any category may reflect general concerns in the academic study of religion, or it may reflect meaningful problems in a specific area of study. It is not necessary for the topics to be directly related to the general theme or sub-themes of the congress.

The presentation of papers consists of four categories: organized panels, symposia, roundtable sessions and individual papers.

ORGANIZED PANELS. The organized panels consist of panelists with a panel convener as the chair. The duration is 2 hours, and it is expected that the convener of the panel will directly contact panelists and put together a single proposal for the entire panel. The proposal should contain the title of the panel, the names and institutional affiliations of the four panelists plus a respondent, and a 150 word abstract of the topic. The proposal must be sent by the individual who in convening the panel.

SYMPOSIA. Groups of scholars engaged in a particular project which will likely lead to publication may submit a proposal for a symposium. It is expected that these groups will circulate their papers for discussion prior to the congress. Scholars are advised to bring along with them sufficient number of copies (at least 20 copies) of their papers for circulation to the participants. The proposal should contain the title of the symposium, the names and institutional affiliations of the panelists plus a respondent, and a 150 word abstract of the topic. The duration of the symposium is 2 hours which may be used as seems fit. It is the responsibility of the convener of the symposium to contact the participants and to present a formal proposal to the Congress Academic Program Committee at the earliest possible date.

ROUNDTABLE SESSIONS. Roundtable sessions consists of a maximum of 10 participants around a table. These are meant for more detailed discussion among scholars on their respective research work. Space for these sessions is limited. Proposals for these sessions should consist of the title of the paper, full name and institutional affiliation of the presenter, and a 150 word abstract. Those whose proposals are accepted will subsequently need to send 10 copies of the complete paper in advance for circulation among those who would register for roundtable sessions. Scholars are encouraged to advertise their proposed roundtable sessions among their peers to enable maximum participation.

INDIVIDUAL PAPERS. Papers prepared by individuals and not associated with any pre-arranged session will be organized according to subject matter and arranged into coherent group sessions. In any given session there will be 3 or 4 papers lasting 2 hours. Proposals for individual papers should consist of the title of the paper, full name and institutional affiliation of the presenter, and a 150 word abstract.

LANGUAGE POLICY
The official languages of the IAHR are English, French, and that of the host country (in this case, Japanese). This policy is not intended to exclude other languages. Participants are welcome to use the language of their choice if they feel there is a sufficient audience.
