スラヴ言語学者として高名なオリガ・T・ヨコヤマ教授（UCLA）による特別講義です。ロシア昔話に登場する森の妖婆バーバ・ヤガーの複雑な姿を描き出し、その複雑な性格の謎に理論的に迫ります。

＜講義要旨＞

この講義では、ロシア民話の中でももっとも驚くべき存在の一つである「バーバー・ヤガー」について、その機能や歴史について解明します。バーバ・ヤガーは互いに矛盾する性格をいくつも持っていて、恐ろしくおぞましいものであると同時に、時に驚くほど優しくもなります。死んでいるのか、生きているのか？　目が見えないのか、よく見えるのか？　処女なのか、母親なのか？　基本的にはおぞましい悪役として、子供なら誰でも知っていて恐れるおとぎ話の登場人物ですが、その一方で、昔話の他の平板なすべての登場人物たちと比べると、バーバ・ヤガーの複雑さは際立っており、芸術家・作曲家・映画監督たちにインスピレーションを与えてきました。この講義ではバーバー・ヤガーの全体像を描くことを試み、あわせてその複雑さを説明しようとするいくつかの理論について考察します。

<Abstract>

In this lecture, the complex character of the most striking figure of Russian tales is revealed in its functional and historical aspects. Baba Yaga has many contradictory features, some of which are terrifying and repulsive, while other are surprisingly endearing. Is she dead or alive? blind or seeing? virginal or maternal? As the basic villainess, she is the stuff of children's tales, familiar to and feared by every child. At the same time, against the background of all other unidimensional folk tale characters, her collective image stands out as remarkably complex, providing inspiration to artists, composers and filmmakers. The lecture will present a comprehensive portrait of Baba Yaga, and discuss some theories attmpting to explain her complexity.
