This course introduces Canadian literature written in English by authors like Margaret Atwood, Mordecai Richler, and Michael Ondaatje. Joy Kogawa’s Obasan and other works of Asian Canadian literature are also given special attention, as are the songs of Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Leonard Cohen, the Band, and other Canadian singer-songwriters.
Canadian literature once focused on the human struggle to survive amidst threatening nature; now, the “multicultural” diversity of urban Canada sets the tone.
