About the project

Aims of the Project

The research of global history developed mainly in Europe and North America has been strained and biased. The global history from European perspectives has focused on their own modern era, when they led the globalization with their vast amount of documents and hasn't seen modern proactive development in Asia and that original meanings as al result. In the global history from European perspectives, Asia has been depicted as dependent countries under European colonial power or recognized as minor countries n subordination to the modern Eurpoean world. Meanwhile historical researchers in Asian side have focused on emergence of nation states after colonial era. Therefore they tend to lack the efforts to discover commonality and originality in historical development in Asia. In these circumstances some Japanese historians who study global history have suggested Asian commonarities through history of trade and maritime history.
This research project focuses on development and changes in Asian region as a whole and establishes the spatial information system for Asian history (Asian History GIS) to find uniqueness and commonality in Asia. The poject is interdisciplinary covering not only history but also economics, politics, environmental sociology, geography and statistics. Also the project involves scholars from other countries to be a role model for globalization of the research in Japan.
