Group A
"Development and Social Movement-The Maghreb Seminar"
KAZUO MIYAJI (the Keisen Jogakukan University)
As a part of our Team 2 Group A's Islamic Area Studies Research Project, we have been preparing a literal catalog/raisonne of "Development and Social
Activities in Maghreb Countries" since 1997. We held our first seminar of the year on August 29, 1998 and have ordained our annual research plans as
follows:
Literature Preparation
- Summary
- generate a catalog/raisonne regarding "State and Society", "Development", and "Social Movements" of the Maghreb countries;
- in the area of "Development," we take into account the relationship between economic development and social development to examine the degree of state intervention since independence in the process of 'nation building.' Group 2A also focuses on social development;
- "social movement" usually refers to labor, student, Islamic, women's, or human rights movements, but we will focus on social indicators such as urban riots and juvenile delinquency as well as some problems that are usually connoted as social problems, such as urban, unemployment, and labor turnover issues;
- chronologically take into account modern times (especially the post-independence era), and if necessary, trace back into the past, to clarify the historical connection between the movements and issues.
- Plans
- complete the report during 1999 to publish the results within the limits of '99 fiscal budget (prepare the report by January's seminar and MIYAJI will adjust it by March).
- Hosting Seminars
- host seminar to share comments and results regarding the theme and to monitor the progress of the project;
- the schedule and personnel responsible for reporting are as follows:
1st Session (08/29) - Meeting (MIYAJI)
2nd Session (10/24) - Algeria (WATANABE, OHTSUKI)
3rd Session (11/28) - All Maghreb (MIYAJI)
4th Session (12/21) - Morocco (REZRAZI, NAKAGAWA)

- all sessions will be held at the Islamic Area Studies Office (Literature Department, Tokyo University Annex) Meeting Room at 1:00-3:30 PM except in January when it will be held at 4:00 PM;
- Hosting Workshops
- invite researchers from Maghreb and host a workshop during January and February;
- possible participants, H. E. Aicha Belarabi has been acceded to a ministerial post, so we must consider an alternate representative; have completed as planned by August, but we have decided to host "Democratization and Social Movement" workshop along with the 2A General Assembly, and we are planning to invite sociologist Mr. Abdalkader Zghal (CERES) as our participant (details are in the attached document).
