The session reviewed in its entirety the historical research trends of the historical Syrian region (of which the focus is on today's Syria and Lebanon) from early Islam till the present day. Though we were unfortunately unable to have a lengthy discussion on this topic due to time constraints, one could say that the session was a successful test case. The two dimensions of the region's social structure-continuity and intermittence-were raised from each of the reports, and the observations of the region's flexibility within its changeability as well as its sustained level of stability were confirmed.
