WORKSHOP OF THE UNIT 5, IAS PROJECT

"Ziyara: Ethno-Historical Study
of
Muslim Visitation to Religious Places"

Program

Date: February 25 - 26, 1999

Place: Room 252, Building 9, Sophia University
(7-1 Kioi-cho, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo)
(3 minutes on foot from Yotsuya Station on JR Chuo-line,
on Marunouchi-line and Nanboku-line of Eidan Subway)

Saint veneration is one of the main themes of the Unit 5 of the Islamic Area Studies Project. Therefore we hope to discuss this subject based on the papers of case studies, in which Muslim habits to visit periodically specific religious places should be reported and analyzed. We need papers on the different ages, different areas and different disciplines (and also on different religions) to explore some holistic viewpoints. At the same time, we consider these visiting habits can be generalized so as to develop theories about human gathering, moving and communication.

Participants are requested to kindly refrain from quoting any part of the papers to be read in this workshop. They will be published soon.

Coordinators would like to express sincere gratitude to everyone who has supported this workshop, particularly Dr. A. LAKHSASSI and Dr. I. PETROSYAN, who willingly accepted our request of participation.

We also thank the students who are helping us in running the workshop.
